Imagine you are freshly graduated and at your first job interview. You look around the room and see the HR person, your potential manager and... Mom?

According to a recent Canadian survey conducted on behalf of RSM Richter, one of Canada's largest independent accounting and business advisory firms, one in five Canadians (19 per cent) believe parents should be allowed to attend job interviews with their child. Interestingly, more men than women want parents involved: 22 per cent of all men surveyed believe parents should be allowed to accompany children on job interviews, versus 16 per cent of women.

The survey of 2,000 Canadians, conducted by Decima Research, also revealed that more than half of all Canadians (53 per cent) agree that parents should have the opportunity to review their children's employment contracts. Overall, half of the respondents (47 per cent) agreed that parents should have a significant role in the career choices of their children.

Old and young agree: Parents should be involved

While all ages surveyed (18-50 and over) agreed that parents should have some involvement in their child's career, more than 1 in 5 of those aged 50 or over agreed that a parent should be able to attend interviews with their child, compared to an average of only 1 in 10 of those aged 34 and under.

Parental involvement strongest in Quebec; weakest in B.C and Ontario

Quebec residents seem to want the most involvement; British Columbia and Ontario residents, the least. When asked if they agreed or disagreed that parents should have a significant role in the career choices of their children, 54 per cent of Quebec residents agreed, while only 42 per cent of British Columbians and 44 per cent of Ontarians concurred.
